One can continue up along the hillside to a rather fine view of Kamakura:
This is a mani-guruma. Sutras, or Buddhist Scriptures, are kept inside them the main cylinder, or rinzo. One can turn the cylinder and get the the same merit as reading the Scriptures.

DeleteJapanese towns and cities are very close together, as you observed.
Every town and city should have places of spiritual refuge, where it's calm and quiet. Seems like the Japanese understand this.
ReplyDeleteLeigh, even in Tokyo you can find these small oases of spiritual calm, often small Shinto Shrines or Buddhist Temples.
DeleteArguably the fact we do not have them says a lot about we in The West.
