The Elisabethenkirche (Church of St. Elizabeth) was built in the mid-1800s (A.D. 1848-1857). It is interesting in that it was the first church built in Basel since the Protestant Reformation.
The church is considered a model of the Swiss Gothic Revival style.
Dietrich Bonhoffer. I was a little surprised at this.
The portrait of Dietrich Bonhoffer is indeed an interesting surprise. You don't mention what denomination the church belongs to, but I assumed Catholic, except for St. Dietrich Bonhoffer?
ReplyDeleteLeigh, it was a surprise to me as well.
DeletePer what I can find, the church belongs to the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton Basel-Stadt, which seems to be a local church (51,000 adherants). Interestingly, the denomination was founded in A.D. 1529.
