2025 Switzerland/Germany: Walking Around Old Town Basel

Various and sundry things seen around Old Town Basel:

This is so "Europe" to me:

The Rhine:  We will see a bit more later:

A store specializing in pens, inks, and sealing wax and stamps.  Sadly, it was closed:

Fountain.  There were many fountains in Basel:

I am not sure if the number is a house number or a date:

  1. I really like that last video which looks to be sort of a cross between a fountain and an automaton.

    1. Ed, the artist is Jean Tinguely (1925-1971). This piece is called Fasnachts-Brunnen, or "Carnival Fountain". There is a museum of his work in Basel.

More interesting photos! Sealing wax......haven't thought of that in years.3M's Magic Scotch tape is the last century's equivalent i guess. Have to use that to keep the envelope closed that I send in the payment for gas & electricity, their envelope just does not have adequate adhesive on it and hasn't for years. Nice to see streets without litter on them.

    1. Nylon12, I cannot think of the last time I saw a story specifically dedicated to elegant writing utensils. Sadly, I suspect sealing wax will not survive in the postal service as it once did.

Streets were indeed clean. Everything felt safe, a feeling I cannot say I have had in a US city in a long time.

  3. Such a lovely town. And again, surprising so few people were out and about. On the other hand, that's the best way to explore.
