One thing that surprised me about Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat is that they are considered active temples; worship still occurs here. This is not something I as a Westerner am used to in my ruins.

The amount of skill required to carve stone this delicately astounds me:

ReplyDeleteEd, I do not even know that would be enough. Angkor Wat is amazing; it would be even more amazing to see it during its glory - or Stonehedge, or Rome, or Athens, or Persepolis, or a thousand other places.
DeleteThe Alhambra...
DeleteAnon - Moorish Spain in general would have been interesting to see.
DeleteGod bless the memory of Santiago Matamoros.

ReplyDeleteAnd most if not all of it built in 37 year period, Nylon12. That is the part that astounds me. And the level of craftsmanship that would have had to exist in what was essentially a subsistence economy.
DeleteEven the roof is carved - amazing. Is there any evidence that they painted anything?
ReplyDeleteLeigh, a little checking says that there is evidence of paint, mostly blacks and reds.
DeleteThe attention to detail is rather astounding.
