Glen, I think it is like everything else: our parents do the best they think they can for us. 40 years ago, trades were seen as stagnant and college was the upward way of mobility. Now, it has almost reversed.
My father worked in the utility industry for 35 years. Outdoor work can be hard labor. I think in some cases they did it to spare us their lives.

My father did not want me to be in the trades - it was one of the few things where I should never have listened to him.
