I am familiar with the terrain of my country but when I look at another country's terrain, I could be looking at Mars for all practical purposes as it looks so foreign to my eyes.
Kevin, that is a great thought and question. It makes me wonder they thought the first time they Britain or the British North or North Africa or Dacia or the Tigris. A Roman soldier could have seen a great many places in his lifetime - mostly, as you point out, on foot.
Leigh, Tacitus is a great author and one of the most approachable Roman writers. He also wrote The Histories and The Annals of Imperial Rome, which I also highly recommend.

ReplyDeleteEd, funny how similar things like mountains and valleys and trees can look completely alien in another landscape.
DeleteWhen I see the Alps I think about the Romans crossing them on foot and I wonder what a Mediterranean soldier thought seeing them for the first time.

DeleteInternet Archive has an audio recording of Germania by Publius Cornelius Tacitus. It's pretty interesting.
