STxAR, C.S. Lewis considered McDonald to be one of the most significant influences on his early life. I have not read much of his work but should. Lewis had him as his guide in The Great Divorce.
John, if you are looking up Scottish Theologians of the 19th Century, I would also comment Robert Murray McCheyne to your attention. He died young, but was a powerful preacher.
