2021 Garden Update

First, a small garden update from that which is planted.

Onions, Sweet Potatoes, and Basil:

Mint, Rosemary, and sprouting Garlic (all around the center olla, not visible yet):

Tomatoes!  Let us see if they hold on:

Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and sweet potatoes:

As mentioned in a comment to Leigh, some of my ollas are emptying faster than the others due to ill fitting stoppers.  My solution?  Tacky glue them in.  We will see how this hold up:

Really just a picture of where I planted.  What you cannot see are the beans, carrots, black eyed peas, and corn that went in around the ollas.  I will be interested to see how they all do:

Finally, I thought I would give a shout out to my Egyptian Walking Onions.  If you let them grow long enough, they will form these small heads which you can plant:

Voila!  New onion coming up!

I think the next level of managing ollas would be to number them by their top plates and then track how the water usage goes.  I suspect I have a few more that will need to be sealed.

Your plants appear to appreciate the slow watering. I hope the garden continues to flourish.

    1. Anonymous, thank you! I hope so too, although I am not sure how much of it is due to the ollas versus the rather unseasonable rain we have been having.

    1. Keith - True. I am also thinking if I can just get away with a table of numbers instead of numbering each one. Keep life easy...

  3. I am really amazed at your basil plant. Ours are literally just stalks with maybe a leaf or two at best. I guess we eat too much pesto and never give it time to recover.

    1. Ed, for better or worse we do not eat that much pesto and have found that a Big Box Brand is actually pretty good and convenient. That said, I bet we try some before the end of the year.

  4. You already have tomatoes!! I only have blooms. I grow three pots of basil because I use a lot of it.

    Your garden is looking good!

    1. Thank you Kelly! The task with me is to see how many tomatoes I end with, not how many I start with. I am hoping the more regular water will help.

  6. I'm impressed with your tomatoes! Lucky you. I've got flowers on mine. :)

What I'm really liking about the ollas is how much easier it is to water everything. And, I don't have to worry about surface evaporation. Another plus.

    1. Thank Leigh - although with me, it is how many I can get to fruition, not how many I have on the vine. Still, I am a lot farther along than last year.

Watering is much easier. I also have a reason to look at every part of the garden. And, I am finding, a thick mulch helps.

Comments are welcome (and necessary, for good conversation). If you could take the time to be kind and not practice profanity, it would be appreciated. Thanks for posting!
