I paid about $1100 in August to travel in February. We had to make two legs, one from my home to Los Angeles, and from Los Angeles to Narita Airport. One of the things I intend to do differently next year is take Southwest (which gives me two bags free) instead of the Minor Major Carrier I did take, which charged me $25 a bag.
Best advice I can give is go to Kayak.com, which is an aggregator. It allows you to search multiple airlines; it also allows you to set up notifications when fares hit a certain number. Helps to automate from checking every day.
