Nylon12, The Rhine figures prominently into Roman History so much that is sometimes becomes "just another river" in the Ancient World. Seeing it, one understands why it was such a natural barrier.
Likely the nature of the high point is why Augusta Raurica was effectively relocated (in administrative control, anyway) to Basel. The high point there is miles away from the river.

High spots were strategic control points back on the freeways of the day. The Rhine looks to be good and wide there TB.
