Jesus walked on water to comfort his terrified followers in the storm tossed boat.
Jesus explains how He is the Bread of Life.
Verses 41-66 expands but only a short snip here: 52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus 60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
A hard teaching seems not acceptable in "Modern Life".
I'm a poor bible scholar as I cannot tell you how many years ago Jesus spoke the sermon on the mount. A few more I suspect than 100+.
Something I used to talk to folks was the "power words" of swearing-cursing. Sex, God and such misused for shock and powerful impact.
When was the last time you heard "OH, BUDDA!" as a curse word?
Satan seldom attacks Buddhists I notice.
Maybe it was so described by Jesus:
John 15 The World Hates the Disciples 18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’
Christianity has always been a threat to the secular thoughts of society. It demands an effort to follow simple rules that glue society together, demands accountability for all actions, and expects an effort to forget selfish ways, love everyone as you would love your closest family, and not use violence as a tool for power. That doesn't set well for those that love power, and wealth, more than they love their fellow man. It's easier to forget the teachings of Christ and not believe there is a higher power that is beyond control by humans. The result is the terrible centuries that have shown nothing changes, unless Christian values are taught.
