Actually, aside from NOT being controlled by other folks' opinions of you the bible is full of concern about how others know you.

1st Corinthians 5: But I now have written unto you not to keep company with any man who is called a brother if he is a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner. With such a one you are not even to eat.
Michael, I think the reference itself is simply that if you guide your life by what other people think of you, you will find that you become defined by them in terms of how you can act. A bit different that how we act engaging with others, if that makes sense.
Truth. Perceptions can change like the wind. If you are attempting to manage those perceptions you have to be a wind sock. I can tell you some stories about that.....
STxAR, I think it can start out innocently enough: we want to make people important to us happy and so we try not to rock the boat. Eventually what happens is that we are perceived as being one way, when quite possibly we are quite another.
That is one of the double edged swords. I often don't care what others think of aspects of my life for the very reason mentioned. But also I wish others would care what I think when they needlessly cause me work and inconvenience because they couldn't be troubled to think about what I might think.

Maybe I misunderstood your Lao Tzu reference?
