We recently watched The Most Reluctant Convert about the life of C.S. Lewis. I knew that he was acquainted with J.R.R. Tolkien, but I didn't realize how instrumental Tolkien was in Lewis's conversion. It gave me a new respect for him.
Leigh, like most things entertainment I see I completely missed this movie being released....
(Quickly educates himself...) Per the Wikipedia entry, the movie is ultimately based on Lewis' autobiography Surprised by Joy, which I heartily recommend if you have not read it (as I would recommend all this Lewis). It talks about his early life and ends with his conversion.
Tolkien was an amazing man - like Lewis, he served in World War I, then went on to teach and wrote for years before he ever achieved fame. JRR Tolkien: A Biography by Humphrey Carpenter is one I remember as good though I have not read it in years; I should re-read it (busily adds it to reading list...).

ReplyDeleteWell, his life was simple. His writing was a bit more complex, but it was certainly something he loved to do.

ReplyDeleteInterestingly, C.S. Lewis often went by "Jack" for reasons I do not recall now. Maybe for the very reason you suggest.
