It's amazing indeed. I often ponder how and where the small mourning doves hide until I notice them hiding in my brush pile full of leaves.
I've fed them for years and yet they are smart enough to *still* not trust me. Fleeing when I drop some feed to the delight of the tree rats (who also are seen making dry leaf nests even yesterday) and the thuggish turkeys (walking vacuum cleaners).
Critters are often smarter than some folks I know. Traveling in the dark in icy conditions to a PARTY with but Party clothing and dainty shoes.
I ask what they would do in an accident and a blank look or smart "I Don't do accidents" response.
Michael,I think the modern world forgets how much the natural world can get by. We assume too often we are "critical" to the process.
As to the latter - we always assume the best outcome of all possible things: cars never break down, conditions are never too cold, and people will also be readily available if needed.
