Native trees are surprisingly hard to kill. We used to clear certain parts of fence rows on the farm and it was a yearly chore to keep the trees from coming back and taking over where it wasn't practical for us to leave them.
Ed, we have (as I am sure you noticed in this week's pictures) predominantly pine, cedar, oak and madrone. There have been beetles problems here, but overall things are okay. Fortunately for us, the pastures here have been cleared for 50 + years so trees coming up along the fence line has not been an issue.
We've had a rough go this past decade as well. First it was the Emerald Ash borer that wiped out half the trees in town and then there is Oak Wilt which is playing hardball with the other half. One thing about it, firewood is cheap mostly because others are like me. I'm still burning wood that I cut down nearly eight years ago and still have several more years left!
Glen, this is actually not at all uncommon for this time of year. We have a Mediterranean climate: It will start raining around the end of October/early November and continue through the end of March or early April. At our elevation, it will stay green until the beginning to the end of June. The dryness you see is the July-October timeframe. Happens every year.
But to your other point, this is why wildfires quickly get out of control.

DeleteEd, true for my parents as well. There is likely more wood down here which, if cut, would probably cover my remaining lifespan to burn.
