A Few Words From...Albert Camus

"The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion."

  1. Well said, though, I wonder if being totally free really is an act of rebellion? I think it's a natural way to live, but maybe it's just society's judgment as rebellion?

  2. Rain, I think that freedom - not necessarily the freedom to act however you please, even at the cost of others but the freedom to life as you please, including being less dependent on anyone or anything - is a great act of rebellion in the modern world. The world, it seems to me, discourages independence and autonomy and tries to push unto the mold of complete interdependence and dependence. We can have a discussion about why, but I would posit it is because interdependence and dependence equal control. And the world does not like people it cannot control.

  3. I agree with what you said. I just think of rebellion in terms of the typical "teenage" rebellion where things are done on purpose to mess with authority. I do see how independence can be seen by society (the sheeple) as an act of rebellion in their eyes.

  4. Rain, I think that is how a lot of people - even myself - have thought of rebellion. Which is convenient for those in authority, as we need never question its other meanings.
