2025 Switzerland/Germany: Fountains of Basel

You may remember this fountain from yesterday:

It turns out that Basel has many fountains.

Any idea of how old those fountains are TB? Had to search the InterNets to find out that cooling off in some are encouraged, big and deep enough. Ah......the things you discover before six AM.......:)

    1. Nylon12, I suspect there was a variety of age based on the types and fittings. But I do think some of them could actually have been from 1600-1700s. I was very surprised at how prevalent they were.

  2. Sitting here, I can think of at least three here in town, none of which I have ever seen working other than in pictures. They probably all date to the early parts of the 20th century. I'm guessing modern knowledge about waterborne diseases and water conservation have put the kibosh on them for now.

    1. That is probably a contributing factor, Ed. That said, my experience in Europe is that you as the individual are much more responsible for your own safety and risks. Here, as you indicated, they are likely a lawsuit waiting to happen.

  3. Fountains are a lovely feature, but I've rarely seen them in towns and cities. It's nice to see they are appreciated in Switzerland.

    1. Occasionally one see them, Leigh. I do not think I have seen as many in 30 U.S. locations as I saw in one day in Basel.

Comments are welcome (and necessary, for good conversation). If you could take the time to be kind and not practice profanity, it would be appreciated. Thanks for posting!
